2014 Having made a place where artists have the right to be wrong
Stories of Space 10 and Space 13 at the Fundació Joan Miró
The presentation of the publication “Having made a place where artists have the right to be wrong. Stories from Espai 10 and Espai 13 of the Joan Miró Foundation” will take place on May 20 at 7 p.m. in the space of Terrario of Matadero in Madrid, with the participation of Jorge Díaz and Ferran Barenblit, curators of Espai 13, and Manuel Segade, author of the publication and curator of the exhibition of the same name that reviews the trajectory of Espai 10 and Espai 13 throughout its 35 years of existence.
The programming for Espai 10 began in 1978 and, after Space 13 took over the activities of this space ten years later, has continued through to the present day. Dedicated for thirty-five years to artistic experimentation and to accommodating emerging names on the local and international scene, it stands out for its continuity and quality, a fact that makes it a unique case study in the institutionalization of contemporary art in Europe. This book is a compendium of their stories, which, presented along thematics lines, allow us to understand the history of art, tastes and aesthetic fashions and institutions. The research that give rise to this volume has its origins in the task of curating an exhibition of the same title in the Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona. Based on a selection of works and fragments from some of the exhibitions held in these spaces, the show was articulated through a montage by the artist Xavier Salaberria.
