2014 Bertha von Suttner

2014-2016

2014 Centenary of the death of Bertha von Suttner

The neighborhood of Castellarnau, in Sabadell, already has a name more linked to the culture of peace in its nomenclature. Next to the streets of Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Bertrand Russell and Milena Jesenská is the square of Bertha von Suttner, a peace activist and first Nobel Peace Prize winner. The claim has been long and led by Montserrat Torruella of the Coordinator Another world is possible. The events are linked to International Women's Day.

The eighth weapon. An exhibition in photographic format denouncing violence against women.

In this installation made in the year 2000, formed by nine pieces that reproduce the lower part of the trunk of a woman, made with recycled and sewn textile materials, two visions come together: infancy, which gives life, and the aggression, which produces death.

It is created to show the aggressions that took place in East Timor during the independence process of Indonesia in 1999. The work, however, expands the concrete fact to become a cry for denouncing violence against women in conflicts warlike.
